Lee Berman, M.D.
a composition for brass quintet by Lewis Berman
performed by the Lyric Brass Quintet, November 13, 2015
LISTEN
Program Note
The composer's mother, Lenore Berman, frequently offered
unsolicited but heartfelt medical advice. For example,
"you know that sugar runs in the family." Thus, the idea for
this composition naturally emerged as the title music for a
never-produced 1970's television show, Lee Berman, M.D.
Picture Lenore in her scrubs, accompanying a gurney hurriedly
pushed through the double doors of an operating room while an
announcer proudly articulates, "Lee Berman, M.D.!" (In actuality,
Lenore's children were watching way too much TV!)
About the Composer
Lewis Berman studied composition with Lawrence Moss at the University
of Maryland and Jonathan Kramer at the College-Conservatory of Music
(CCM) of the University of Cincinnati, sharing the outstanding composer
award upon receiving his Master's Degree at CCM. Combining knowledge of
computer-generated music and software engineering, Lewis'
doctoral thesis
focused on sonification, the art and science of hearing information
communicated through non-speech sound, an aural equivalent of visualization.
lewis earned his Ph.D. from the University of Durham, U.K., in 2011. Also
a pianist, Lewis has performed as orchestral soloist on both sides of the
Atlantic and has premiered various contemporary works.
