Music Group 2021-02-25: Film Music
The selection above is Atmosphères (1961) by
György Ligeti, who forms a cloudscape via a technique he called 'micropolyphony'. This piece was a mood-setting 'overture', heard while waiting for the film proper to start, and heard again during intermission.
Lux Aeterna ("Eternal Light",1966), by Ligeti,
is also in the film. It is scored for sixteen solo voices.
Entirely optional reading: Mike provided
a good article
on Kubrick's musical selections for 2001.
Keeping with the idea of covers, the link above is to a Spanish language
version of Roy Orbison's "Crying", from the David Lynch film
Mulholland Drive.
I think the music in a film should help tell the story, either by creating a
mood, signaling a theme, or cueing the viewer to pay attention (or not). See if
this works for you. The song starts at the 4:13 time mark; the first four
minutes are the setup. The film quality is pretty poor, but the sound is decent.
Mike: Repo Man
Absolutely have to go with Repo Man on this one.
Burning Sensations' "Pablo Picaso"
Suicidal Tendencies' "Institutionalized"
, which was also featured in Iron Man (2008)
The Circle Jerks' "When the Shit Hits the Fan"
(the studio version being on their album, Golden Shower of Hits
And a performance of the eponymous
"Repo Man" by Iggy Pop
[Lewis' note]: It ends at 3:32 — the last minute
of the video is silence. Not sure what that's all about.
Corrie:
Love this
scene from Pulp Fiction with a Chuck Berry song
just because the scene (including the music) seemed surreal based on the storyline.
I also like
one of the songs from Fast and Furious
which I always associate with Paul Walker.
Finally,
Benny Goodman — Swing Kids
Iconic Art Garfunkel song featured in The Graduate. There's a
backstory about
"Hello Darkness my old friend"
.
