The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
Submitted by Lewis. Watch the title sequence, lasting two minutes (beginning through 0:02:00). Scored by Bernard Hermann for orchestra including two theremins.
The Lion in Winter (1968)
Submitted by Myndall. Scored by John Barry. Myndall writes about this and the following submission, "It’s interesting that I saw these at the end of high school and the beginning of college… a very impressionable and special time in life!"
Cathy's Theme from Wuthering Heights (1970)
Submitted by Myndall. Scored by Michel Legrand.
Conan the Barbarian (1982)
Submitted by Scott. Scored by Basil Poledouris.
Scott writes, "Remarkably great score for a semi-cheesy, macho movie with some of the Governator's "best" acting (Ok, I loved it when I was 12 — but I also was into comic books then.) Listen to 'Anvil of Crom' at beginning and then some of the Conan Suite starting at 3:07. Shades of R. Strauss, Holst, and maybe more directly Carl Orff.
Interstellar (2014)
Submitted by Scott. Scored by Hans Zimmer. Scott writes:
- Maybe just a minute from each of these?
- 00:00 — Tick Tock
- 15:00 — Stay
- 26:00 — Detach
- 41:00 — Mountains
- I don't know what composer to compare against. Maybe some of the minimalists, Philip Glass…
Scott's runner ups:
-
Lord of the Rings Soundtracks by Howard Shore. He deserved the Oscars he got. Really made the story come to life — especially with his Wagnerian use of Leitmotifs (and epic length - 15 hours for Wagner, 11+ for LoTR extended)
-
The Red Violin by John Corigliano
-
Requiem for a Dream by Clint Mansell — performed by the Kronos Quartet (esp. Lux Aeterna). You may have heard it — it's used a lot outside the movie in various settings.
March from A Clockwork Orange (1971)

End of Doctor Strangelove (1963)
Submitted by Mike. Music starts at 2:25. Video should automatically begin there.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Submitted by Mike.
Use of Ligeti’s music in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Listen to the first 2:42 (more if you want).
La Valse d'Amélie (Version piano)
Posted by Liz: "The song is "Amelie's Waltz," from the 2001 film Amelie. I fell asleep during the movie when I saw it and I don't remember the soundtrack at all, but this song was played during an 18th century French farce (The Triumph of Love) that I saw recently at the Shotgun Theater in Berkeley, and I fell in love with it."
