Electronic Music: 1960-1980

This week's playlist was once again provided by Scott and Lewis. It features electronic and electroacoustic music from the period 1960-1980.

Milton Babbit: Composition for Synthesizer (1960)

Demonstrates the RCA Synthesizer. American bloop-bleep academic "total serialism". But I like it a great deal! Duration 02:40.

       Otto Luening: Gargoyles (1961)

For violin and synthesized sound. Listen from beginning through at least 05:30. Full duration is 09:25.

       Gordon Mumma: Retrospect (1959-1982)

Listen to beginning through 03:00 Full duration is 45 minutes; you can randomly sample bits beyond your initial listening.

       The Mellotron: Famous Songs

Duration 05:53.

Morton Subotnik: Silver Apples of the Moon (1967)

Classic "process music" on modular analog synthesizer. 4-minute Excerpt from a double-sided LP.

ADSR explained in under one minute

ADSR: Attack, decay, sustain, release — note envelope on analog synthesizer (specifically, first called "ADSR" on the AARP 2600).

Charles Dodge: The Earth's Magnetic Field (1970)

Early computer music which mapped magnetic field data to musical sounds, making it an early sonification. Probably realized via one of Max Matthews' programs. Beginning through 06:00 is sufficient. Full duration 14 minutes.

       Charles Dodge: In Celebration (1975)

More Charles Dodge. Beginning through 01:30 is sufficient. Full duration 08:31.

       Iannis Xenakis: Mycenae Alpha (1978)

Created on the UPIC system he created to allow one to "draw" electronic music. UPIC documentary. First five and a half minutes is sufficient. Full duration is 10 minutes.

Frank Zappa: Anal Retentive Caliope Music

Zappa, of course! Duration is two minutes.

Frank Zappa: The Chrome Plated Megaphone of Destiny

And again. The excerpt begins about 4 minutes in.

       Lewis Berman: electroacoustic fragment (1978)

Hasn't been heard by anyone but me for 47 years! Should I pursue it as a composition? Does Mike recognize the chime? Duration 01:19.
