Chadwick High School Senior Class President Allison Yun ('22) recently
presented a lecture/concert entitled Forgotten Voices — Classical Piano Works of Black Female Composers
to students and faculty. This concert-presentation was conceived and researched by Allison, an extraordinary pianist who made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2017 and has won numerous regional and international piano competitions. Forgotten Voices is the culmination of a year-long independent research project devoted to examining diversity in the classical music canon. Between each piece, Allison delivered an academic lecture that gave historical and musical context, and celebrated four African-American female composers: Florence Price, Dorothy Rudd Moore, Valerie Capers and Margaret Bonds. Allison encouraged the Chadwick community to reflect on what it means to be an
"ethical musician" and to seek out "forgotten voices",
not just in music, but in any endeavor.
